Anne Murray - You Needed Me

Happy 77th Birthday to Canadian singer ANNE MURRAY (born June 20, 1945) who has sold over 55 million copies worldwide during her over 40-year career. NOTE: The video here is YOU NEEDED ME, a 1978 No. 1 hit single in the United States and Canada for which she won a Grammy Award. I've upscaled, framed and improved the color of the clip. Fusing folk with soft-focused country and sweet pop, Anne Murray became one of the biggest stars to emerge from Canada in the 1970s. "Snowbird," a lightly effervescent tune written by Gene MacLellan, brought her international stardom in 1970, kicking off a string of Canadian number one hits which would frequently cross over onto the American Top 40 and Adult Contemporary charts. Occasionally, Murray crested in the Billboard Top 10 -- "Danny's Song" peaked at number seven in 1972, "You Won't See Me" hit number eight in 1974 -- but her biggest hit on the charts was "You Needed Me," which reached number one pop in 1978. "You Needed Me" was a transitional number for the singer, opening up an audience at country radio. Between 1979 and 1986, she racked up nine country number ones. This streak started to fade in the late '80s, but Murray continued to reach the Top 10 on the Canadian Country charts into the early '90s, after which she recorded and performed on a smaller scale, all the while garnering accolades that confirmed her enduring popularity. YOU NEEDED ME Anne Murray was struggling with the pressures of juggling her career and her family life with her husband Bill Langstroth and her toddler son William. One day she was going through a box of tapes when she came across a song that expressed just how she was feeling. Unfortunately, only the writer's name, Randy Goodrum, was on the cassette but her producer researched his name in the phone book and she recorded his song. It became her second American #1 and to this day it remains the favorite of her own recordings. It was about 7 years between when Goodrum started writing this song and Murray recorded it. This was the first hit written by Nashville songwriter and keyboard player Randy Goodrum, who went on to write "Oh Sherrie," "Bluer Than Blue" and "If She Would Have Been Faithful..." "It was sort of an unconditional undeserved love, "said Randy. "How could you love me as if I'm perfect, when I'm not? It was a disclaimer, sort of, for the other person. How could you need me? It's not exactly the same premise as 'I wouldn't belong to a club who'd have me as a member,' but it's a small sliver of unconditional love, which to me is a broad piece of pizza that you can take a lot of minute slivers from along the way."

You Needed Me (1978) - Anne Murray

You Needed Me (1978) - Anne Murray "You Needed Me" is a song written by Randy Goodrum, who describes it as being about "unconditional undeserved love".[2] It was a number one hit single in the United States in 1978 for Canadian singer Anne Murray, for which she won a Grammy Award. In 1999, Irish pop band Boyzone recorded a hit cover of the song that hit number one on the UK Singles Chart. "You Needed Me" was first recorded by singer Anne Murray in 1978. The song peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and revitalized her career after several years of declining popularity as it became her first Top 40 US single since her 1974 remake of The Beatles' "You Won't See Me". The song, included on her 1978 album Let's Keep It That Way, was also a top-five country single and won Song of the Year at the Academy of Country Music awards, and is her most successful single in the United Kingdom, where it made the top 30. Murray is quoted in The Billboard Book of Number One Hits by Fred Bronson as saying she was not surprised by the song's success, as she knew from the start the song would be a hit because she broke down in tears the first time she tried to sing it.
