500 Days in the wild: hiking the Great Trail
Documentary filmmaker Dianne Whelan attempts to hike, bike and paddle the longest trail in the world and make an indie doc about the adventure.
A visit to the oldest tree in Saskatchewan. Slept next to this 160 year old Cottonwood which predates the Province of Saskatchewan by 50 years. It is 5 metres wide, 22 metres tall and used to be taller but got hit by lightening. The Cottonwoods were once abundant here but were heavily logged in the 20 century. It was like spending time a library, being in a place with lots of stories. #quiettime #tree #wisdom5 days ago
Spent last evenings sunset hoping to get some magic light on these wise ones. With the last light they walked out from behind trees for a drink of water and said hello. We don’t need language. Silence sometimes speaks more directly to the heart. Back on trail now heading towards Deifenbaker Lake over next few days. @diannewhelanphotos @thegreattrail @toqueandcanoe @pavedtopines #buffalo #animalwisdom #magichour #womeninfilm26 days ago
Behind the scenes of 500 days. For the next two weeks we have been given the kind support of this van from the amazing men @pavedtopines. A bit of luxury on the @thegreattrail so I can flip between hiking and biking and filming. Just another example of Saskatchewan spirit. #kindness #gratitude #goodpeople #saskatchewan29 days ago
There are many answers to the question, “ why are you spending years doing a 24000km Trail?” This is the one that came to me today while hiking Saskatchewan fields. Back on the trail. Followed coyote and deer prints breaking trail on drift snow. It was beautiful and quiet on the White Butte trail leaving the Qu’Appelle valley heading south towards Regina. Dreamtime now and more skiing tomorrow. #silence #land #soulfood The Great Trail @diannewhelanphotos Tourism Saskatchewan1 month ago
1 minute promo on current film project 500 Days in the wild: hiking the Great Trail on the world’s longest trail. The journey continues soon. I have learned in listening to indigenous elders that it takes 7 years to heal a broken spirit. Been four years since I left home and I understand that wisdom now. #womeninfilm #selfreflection #wisdom 🦅 🌍 ❤️ Music by @Chantal Thompson and Benji Perosin Cinematography by Dianne Whelan, Duane Kelly and Jeremy Munce2 months ago
