If Google’s criteria is about numbers, Norooz is celebrated by more than 300 million people all around the world including in the Balkans, the Black Sea Basin, the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Middle East as well as in Europe and the US. In US cities such as Los Angeles, Washington DC and Irvine, CA, to name a few, banners in the streets and city events prove the confirmed interest for Norooz(source: UN, Wikipedia)
Norooz, or Nowruz, is an ancestral festivity marking the first day of spring or the vernal equinox at the very precise time with the precision of seconds. It is the ONLY event of this type which happens at the same instant all over the world (unlike New year eve being at local time, Norooz happens at a GLOBALinstant). In this technology era, with the trend towards “Global” and “real time” events, Norooz is the most modern event of its kind. It deserves a GLOBAL doodle.
On May 10, 2010, in it’s United Nation’s resolution A/RES/64/253/ Norooz was proclaimed as an official UN observance because it promotes peace and solidarity, particularly in families and among nations. On 15 March 2010, The United States House of Representatives passed The Nowruz Resolution (H.Res. 267), by a 384-2 vote, "Recognizing the cultural and historical significance of Nowruz, ... ."
Norooz, is one of the oldest new year celebrations, by the human kind. Estimated to be 3000+ years old, it is the celebration of the vernal equinox and the annual earth’s renaissance, and is therefore attached to no religion nor a specific country. (source: Wikipedia)
It’s also for the same reasons that for several years, the US Presidents have observed the event either through formal white house communications or though videos like the last one by President Barak Obama,s Norooz celebration message.
Last, but not the least, celebrating Norooz sends a message of peace from the nature on the vernal equinox and symbolizes renaissance, peace and love from one of the most ancient civilizations and we need it especially now, to avoid isolation of people in that region of the world, at a cornerstone of history when tension is growing higher everyday. Humanity needs it.
