Founded in 2010 by CEO Joe DeSena, Spartan is the world’s largest obstacle race and endurance brand. Beyond engaging more than 1 million participants in the more than 200 race events, the Spartan lifestyle spans more than 30 countries and encompasses a global championship series, training and nutrition programs, health and wellness products and a range of media entities.

Spartan’s militaristic-style obstacle races have seen more than 5 million participants jump through fire and over the finish line after pushing their bodies and minds to limit across miles of unforgiving terrain while conquering signature obstacles such as the spear throw, bucket brigade and barbed wire crawl. Race events include three distances: the three to five-mile, 20-23 obstacle “Sprint;” eight to 10-mile, 24 to 29 obstacle “Super;” and 12 to 14-mile, 30 to 35 obstacle “Beast,” which, when completed in one race season earns competitors the coveted “Trifecta” medal. All races are timed and feature Elite, Competitive and Open heats, along with Spartan Kids races designed to challenge youth ages four to 14 with special obstacles and trails. The Spartan Championship Series features global rankings which culminate into the 2017 Reebok Spartan Race World Championship, where the sport’s best male and female athletes collide in Lake Tahoe, CA September 30 through October 1.

Spartan Endurance, created to bring participants to their breaking points and build them back up again include the 26.2-mile (or greater), 60 to 70 obstacle Ultra Beast; four and 12-hour Hurricane Heats, and 60 to 70-hour Agoge, which is based on the rite of passage ancient Spartan boys faced at the age of 7.

On television “Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge,” the brand’s NBC prime-time sports entertainment show garnered more than 4 million viewers per episode in its second season, while Spartan’s NBC Sports documentary series and live streaming broadcasts centered around its U.S. Championship Series and Spartan Pro Team average close to two-million combined viewers. Spartan’s editorial website, features training and nutrition tips by top health & wellness experts, including a Workout of the Day (WOD) and Food of the Week (FOW). Content is also available daily to Spartan’s 7 million social media followers, and through a six week on-demand streaming class with the DailyBurn.

In 2016, the brand opened its flagship $4 million “Spartan Gym” in the 1 Hotel in Miami and in 2017, launched “Spartan Strong,” a group fitness class inspired by the gritty race experience in partnership with Life Time Fitness. Spartan currently has more than 1,000 “SGX” coaches in health clubs world-wide, who apply the minimalistic training principals of the ancient Spartans to prepare competitors for races and life’s many obstacles.
